There’s a popular saying out there that goes, “Money, Power, Respect,” as if one naturally leads to the other. It’s catchy. It’s seductive. But more than that, it’s a dangerous belief rooted in a system that was designed to keep us chasing shadows, never realizing the full potential of our power.

Let’s be real for a second. This mantra is fed to us daily, especially in the Black community, as if it’s the blueprint to success. The system keeps telling us that if we secure the bag (money), then power and respect will follow. But what if I told you that this belief is upside down, and following it only keeps us locked in a cycle that wasn’t built for us to thrive? What if I told you that respect is the true foundation upon which both power and money are built?

Here’s why.

The System Was Built in Reverse

We weren’t born into the system of capitalism and supremacy — we were integrated into it, by force. A system where wealth was built off our labor, and power was established through the dehumanization and exploitation of our ancestors. So when you’re chasing “money, power, respect” in that order, you’re adopting the very mindset of those who oppressed us. We’ve been led to believe that financial gain is the first step toward empowerment, but that only benefits a system that thrives off our never-ending hustle for cash.

The reality is, wealth without integrity, leadership, or respect will always be temporary. Think about how many wealthy Black people have been stripped of their influence the moment they no longer played by the system's rules. Or how even with money, some of us still find ourselves disrespected in boardrooms, in politics, and on the streets.

That’s because true power doesn’t come from money — it comes from respect. And respect is earned through leadership, character, and being a person of value to your community, not by the dollar amount in your bank account.

Flip the Script: Respect Leads to Power, Which Creates Money

So let’s change the narrative.

When we flip the script, we realize that respect should be the starting point. Not money. Not material success. Respect is the foundation that makes all other things possible. It’s about how you show up in the world — your integrity, your vision, your ability to bring others with you. Respect is not something you can buy; it’s earned through your contributions, your strength of character, and your leadership.

And once you have the respect of your community, the power follows. Because power is not just about control — true power is the ability to influence, to mobilize people, to set a vision and have others believe in it. When you are respected, people naturally follow your lead. They trust you. They invest in you.

From there, money becomes a byproduct. Not the goal, but the natural outcome of the influence and respect you’ve already gained. Money, in this sense, is no longer something you chase. It flows to you as a result of the structures you’ve built, the relationships you’ve nurtured, and the power you wield through respect.

The Power of Leadership: The New Path Forward

The truth is, we’ve been looking at success through the wrong lens. Many of us believe that money is the key to unlocking the doors of opportunity, but the reality is, it’s your leadership that creates sustainable change. When we focus on leading with respect, we build a foundation that outlasts individual wealth or status.

Think of leaders who’ve truly transformed communities — people like Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Fannie Lou Hamer. What they had in common was the respect of the people. They were able to mobilize entire movements not because they were rich, but because they were respected. The power they wielded was born out of their dedication, integrity, and leadership, which in turn created access to resources, funds, and support.

When you lead with respect and integrity, your power is undeniable. It’s not dependent on systems that weren’t designed for you. It’s rooted in your community, your influence, and your ability to uplift others. And when you build from that place, the money will come. Not because you’re chasing it, but because you’ve built something real, something lasting, that people want to invest in.

Endless Possibilities Await Us

When we break free from the “money first” mentality, we unlock a world of possibilities. You begin to see that you don’t need to conform to a system that wasn’t built for you to succeed. Instead, you can build your own. A system where respect, power, and money flow naturally from the strength of your character and your leadership. A system where we uplift each other, where wealth is shared, and where our influence isn’t dependent on the crumbs the system throws our way.

Imagine what happens when we collectively adopt this new approach. When we respect each other first. When we honor each other’s contributions. When we lead our families, our communities, and our businesses with integrity. The power we create together is immeasurable. And the wealth we generate will no longer be fleeting or fragile because it will be rooted in something much deeper — our respect for ourselves and each other.

The time is now to reclaim our narrative. To stop chasing after money and to start building the kind of respect and leadership that naturally leads to lasting power and wealth. This is how we break free from the trap that’s been set for us. This is how we flip the script and unlock the endless possibilities of our future.

Let’s lead with respect. Let’s create real power. And let the money follow
