Why self-awareness is important

Updated: Oct 6, 2021

Self-awareness is the consciousness of your individuality.

Self-awareness is essential to your personal development and growth. To be self-aware is to understand your character, desires, and possess the ability to identify and manage your emotions as they arise.

Making life decisions before understanding your personality, emotions, habits, needs, and values creates the perfect recipe for a lifetime of heartache and pain. But, finding yourself does not exclude you from pain, in fact, your journey to finding yourself requires you to accept that pain is a part of life. You must learn how to channel the pain you encounter to create the outcome in life you deserve.

Humans tend to avoid pain at all costs, but it is through avoiding those experiences that restrict us from viewing the image of life in its entirety. If you allow fear to overcome your ability to live, then you will never live, your life would only be spent existing. How you perceive a fearful or hurtful situation will determine the degree of success you are able to achieve.

How to increase self-awareness

1. Personality:

Personality is not normally changed, your objective is to understand your personality by asking yourself a few questions. The next step is to use what you have learned to strengthen your weaknesses and build on your strengths.

  • Am I an Introvert or Extrovert

  • What are your strengths and weaknesses? (not having any weaknesses is not an option, we all have them)

  • How would others describe me?

  • What are five traits that would define me?

  • How would a stranger view me?

  • What role do I play in my friend group?

  • What do others think of me?

2. Emotions:

There is importance in understanding your own emotions, what causes them, and how they impact your thoughts. To develop in this area you must understand the internal process associated with each decision that involves your emotional intelligence.

3. Values:

Your objective is to find the 8 core values that guide you through life. How do you priorities the things that mean the most to you? Do you priorities career over family? Personal accolades over community?

4. Emotions:

There is importance in understanding your own emotions, what causes them, and how they impact your thoughts. To develop in this area you must understand the internal process associated with each decision that involves your emotional intelligence.

5. Needs:

The ability to meet your needs will create motivation. Create a list of things that you understand are a necessity for your personal development. These are things such as status and lifestyle or family and community.

Focusing on self-awareness will make you more effective in your day-to-day life, which results in a happier more productive life with an increased chance to achieve success.
